MoveOn Statement on the GOP’s Improper, Unwarranted, & Islamophobic Attempt to Remove Congresswoman Omar From Her Committee

Washington, D.C. Statement from MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting on the improper and Islamophobic attempt to remove Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from her House Foreign Affairs Committee assignment as part of Kevin McCarthy’s corrupt bargain with MAGA:

“The attempted removal of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from a committee she has served on for more than two years—and has extensive credentials to continue to serve on—would be improper and unwarranted and would show how radical and out of touch the Republican Party has become. Republicans are clearly more interested in political revenge than governing. This proposed vote is also a demonstration of how weak Speaker McCarthy is, as he has once again caved to the most radical elements of his caucus. It’s clear GOP leadership wants to improperly remove Representative Omar from her committee assignment because of her identity and her background.

“And the vote would be in stark contrast to the previous bipartisan vote to remove Representatives Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene for their racist and violent threats against fellow members that are now being ignored by McCarthy in exchange for MAGA allowing him to become speaker.

“While Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans stay focused on launching revenge political attacks and advancing their MAGA agenda, we know that Congresswoman Omar will continue to put people over politics and help her constituents in Minneapolis-St. Paul and throughout Minnesota.”
